Davin — February 22nd, 2009

I posted earlier this month about the release of Lay Flat, the new contemporary photography project spearheaded by Shane Lavalette. During this month, leading up to its shipping date, the photography journal Flak Photo run by Andy Adams is featuring a series of images from Lay Flat.

I’m excitedly waiting to receive my copy of Remain in Light, the first edition from Lay Flat. I say edition and not issue because while Lavalette does refer to this as issue one, the project is more than a magazine release. Although I don’t yet know exactly what format it will take, what Lavalette has produced is a journal, a portfolio, and an exhibit.

As a journal, Remain in Light offers 4 essays, an interview, and a poem from a diverse group of artist/writers — a blend of critical, inquisitive, and exploratory voices all revevant to contemporary visual art. Lay Flat is most remarkable in that it presents the unique opportunity to own a limited edition set of prints from 20 photographers. This most of all is what sets the project apart from magazine or even book releases. It’s like a boxed exhibition complete with catalogue.

It’s a brave project to undertake. This format challenges buyers to think differently than they might simply ordering another magazine or book. Like the successful 20×200, it provides an extremely inexpensive introduction to owning artwork. Beyond cutting up and framing your latest Photo-Eye or Aperture book purchase, it’s unlikely you’ll find another way to own an instant collection of art. At $25, the first edition of Lay Flat can’t possibly last long so order one today.
