Expiration Notice

Since I turn 40 in a few days, I was heartened to find the new site Expiration Notice curated by Stan Banos and Mark Page. While I’m not ready to cry out “pity the middle-aged photographer,” it is interesting to see someone addressing the truth that there are many photographers just coming into their own far past their twenties. I wholeheartedly support younger emerging artists but every once in a while I get this twinge when I see age restrictions linked with “emerging” in the art world.

Currently, there are several online sites, print publications and competitions that cater exclusively to young and emerging photographers- and god bless ‘em! This site however, will serve as an online gallery for those who’ve already lived a life, continue to do so, and have the quality goods long denied the glory of the the glossy magazines or gleaming white gallery walls. We may not do much in the way of fame and fortune, but we may get you a few well deserved seconds of recognition. — Expiration Notice

  2. I’ll have to check out that site. I’m in my mid-30s and starting to feel the same. One thing that I think about when I start getting down about age and “making it”… I look at who are my influences or are top photographers that I look up at… and see that they are all older people that have stuck to the grind and have achieved becoming “famous” for their work. I still have have plenty of time and pictures to take.
