Magenta television
Davin — February 27th, 2008

Over the past few years, Toronto’s Magenta Foundation has fostered and promoted contemporary photography in Canada and around the world with their Flash Forward and Carte Blanche books and a successful print magazine.

Magenta has now launched a new website that’s a precursor to a broadcast television channel on photography arts. Magenta television launches with video features from: Robyn Cumming, Adrian Fish, Jamie Campbell, and Christopher LaMarca.

Here’s a peek at Robyn Cumming’s feature. MakingRoom featured Robyn’s In Place series in our first issue.

Things I have learned in my life so far
Davin — February 25th, 2008

Stefan Sagmeister has launched a community site which follows from the title of his recent book:

“The idea for this site originally came out of my own list in my diary, under the very same title: Things I have learned in my life so far. Astonishingly, I have only learned twenty or so things so far. Over the last five years I did manage to publish these maxims all over the world, in spaces normally occupied by advertisements and promotions: as billboards, projections, light-boxes, magazine spreads, annual report covers, fashion brochures, and, recently, as giant inflatable monkeys.

So here I extend this same question to you:
What have you learned in your life so far? What is it that you are fairly sure about? What is it that you believe in by now?” — thingsihavelearnedinmylife.com

SOLO — Shane Lavalette
Davin — February 22nd, 2008

Shane LavaletteIn the past few years, Shane Lavalette has become well known in online photo circles for his insightful journal postings and interviews.

This image—Feora with Monarch Butterfly—is from Shane’s recent on-going series Who Knows Where the Time Goes; a project which seems to evoke the in-between, somewhat wistful, moments of experience.

Shane is a member of Fjord and recently co-founded Remain in Light, an “unbound publication of photography”, with Karly Wildenhaus.

Pause, to Begin. Again.
Davin — January 31st, 2008

Back in November, I briefly mentioned Ethan Jones and David Wright’s project Pause, to Begin — a multi-faceted photo initiative that will in-part result in the creation of a book. Jones, Wright and a team of “creatives” and “advisors” have now launched a new site that goes into more detail about the project and also introduces a blog.

The blog is already quite active and worth checking out. Photographers interested in being involved in the process have until April 1, 2008 to apply.

SOLO – Shawn Records
Davin — January 22nd, 2008

Shawn RecordsA photographer with a name that’s a fair statement of fact, Shawn Records creates personal and loosely narrative work.

“Photography for me, is an act of paying attention, responding, and manipulating context. ultimately, I photograph small things that hint at larger ideas – moments, objects, relationships, gestures; the details of everyday living that, when put into another context, take on weight. This process remains the same whether I’m photographing my kids in the backyard or doing an editorial portrait for a magazine.” – shawnrecords.org
