Pause, to Begin. Again.
Davin — January 31st, 2008

Back in November, I briefly mentioned Ethan Jones and David Wright’s project Pause, to Begin — a multi-faceted photo initiative that will in-part result in the creation of a book. Jones, Wright and a team of “creatives” and “advisors” have now launched a new site that goes into more detail about the project and also introduces a blog.

The blog is already quite active and worth checking out. Photographers interested in being involved in the process have until April 1, 2008 to apply.

SOLO – Shawn Records
Davin — January 22nd, 2008

Shawn RecordsA photographer with a name that’s a fair statement of fact, Shawn Records creates personal and loosely narrative work.

“Photography for me, is an act of paying attention, responding, and manipulating context. ultimately, I photograph small things that hint at larger ideas – moments, objects, relationships, gestures; the details of everyday living that, when put into another context, take on weight. This process remains the same whether I’m photographing my kids in the backyard or doing an editorial portrait for a magazine.” – shawnrecords.org

The Photographs Not Taken
Davin — January 18th, 2008

Will Steacy is a photographer and writer living in New York. He recently launched a project entitled The Photographs Not taken, in which he has collected the words of almost thirty photographers – words which take the place of photographs that they could, or would not take.

“The Photographs Not Taken is a collection of essays by photographers about the times they didn’t use their camera. This collection is a series of photographs not taken with a camera, but, instead, lived and remembered. Here the basic set of rules that apply to the making of a photograph are put into reverse; instead of looking out into the world through a camera lens, this series of essays looks directly into the photographer’s eye and mind and focuses on where the photographs come from.” – Will Steacy

Davin — January 11th, 2008

Davin Youngs: UntitledOur first SOLO image of 2008 is from Davin Youngs, a Chicago-based photographer who works comfortably with portraiture, landscape, and concept.

His website, These are My Pictures, has some edited galleries as well as a few conceptual series – notably his on-going Placement of Self self-portrait work.

Davin is member of Fjord and is also the artist featured in The Present Group’s Winter 2008 issue.

I should also compliment Davin’s parents on their excellent taste in baby names.

31 Under 31: Young Women in Art Photography
Davin — January 5th, 2008

Open Call for Emerging Women Photographers Under 31

On March 1, 2008, in honor of Women’s History Month, Humble Arts Foundation, in collaboration with Ladies Lotto, will present “31 Under 31: Young Women in Art Photography,” a month-long exhibition celebrating 31 of the most innovative young women in emerging art photography under the age of 31. The Exhibition is co-curated by Lumi Tan, Director of Zach Feuer Gallery in NYC, and Jon Feinstein, Curatorial Director of Humble Arts Foundation.

We are now accepting submissions from women photographers under the age of 31.

  • Submission deadline: Friday, January 25th, 2008
  • Submission guidelines: 5 – 10 jpegs, 550 pixels wide @ 72dpi, RGB, brief bio and artist statement
  • Eligibility: Photographers must be female and born after March 1, 1977
  • Send submissions to: 31@hafny.org We will not consider images sent in a zipped file.

There is no submission fee.

I’ll simultaneously applaud another of Humble’s efforts to foster and promote contemporary photography but also say again that I think age and “emerging” need not be tied together. I agree with Amy Stein’s post about this where she says:

…by narrowing the definition of emerging artists to age you are reinforcing the idea that the young have a patent on artistic efflorescence and economic need.“– Amy Stein
